Members present: Secretary Todd Warren, Chairman Denis Rokicki, Vice Chairman Frank Walterhouse,
Members Absent: Cliff Grostick, Patty Gettings
Others present: Township Supervisor, Cathy Demitroff
Call to Order: The Meeting was called to order at 6:17pm by Chairman Denis Rokicki
Approval of the Minutes of the April 17, 2008 meeting: . Motion by Walterhouse to approve, supported by Rokicki.
Old Business:
1. Olsen Grant application. Walterhouse stated that he and Supervisor Demitroff meet with the Administrator for the Olsen Foundation, John Spencer. Mr. Spencer came out to the park to look over the proposed restroom project and ask questions. Mr. Spencer asked if the Township would be able to match their donation. Walterhouse said we should hear from the Foundation near the end of June.
2. Skate Park Grant. Warren stated that the teen dance fund-raiser had raised a little more money. He will continue to work with the skaters and parents to get the qualifications together for applying for the Tony Hawk Grant.. The next deadline for the Tony Hawk Grant is Oct. 1st. Some of the other fund-raisers that the skatepark supporters are working on is a possible skate-a-thon and skateboard competition. Demitroff suggested that the liability issue of a skatepark be looked into.
3. Playground Equipment. Rokicki stated that he would like to get more groups and parents involved in the playscape idea. He is hoping to build more awareness and support through the summer.
4. Raffle. Demitroff stated that she had researched the raffle requirements and will work on getting the requirements met. She also reported that Patty Gettings had spoke to some of the softball players and they liked the raffle idea and suggested a possible softball tournament to raise money for the bathroom project.
New Business:
1. Grant from Grand Traverse Band. Demitroff presented a new cover letter for the grant application in June. Demitroff asked for suggestions. Katrina Smith suggested that we should group some of our projects together for the grant application. All board members felt this was a good idea. Katrina Smith suggested that "Safety" or "park improvement" could be common themes. Motion by Rokicki to combine the bathroom project with the playground improvement and skatepark and request a total project amount of $50,000, supported by Warren. Ayes;all Nays;none.
Rokicki will present the new cover letter at the next months Township Board meeting.
2. Rotary Charities Grant Application. Walterhouse presented a grant application for the Rotary Charities of Traverse City. Warren said he would look into the application for presentation at next meeting.
3. Per Diem. Demitroff presented per diem request for committee members. Motion by Warren to approve the per diem request, supported by Rokicki. Ayes;all Nays;none. .
4. Meeting Date. Walterhouse suggested that we re-instate our August 21st meeting to help get together some of the grant applications. All members agreed. Demitroff said she will post the change.
Public Input: Katrina Smith, of Homestead Township, presented a fund-raiser idea that she and other skatepark supporters had come up with. The idea is for an all park fundraising carnival. She already has approval for the use of the park and hall on June 22nd, Sunday. Her family has various carnival games for kids and will look into the cost of renting a bouncing room and tents and other games. Several committee members said they would be willing to donate money for possible rentals and game prizes. Demitroff said she has a list of numbers to call and fax for doing promotions and announcements. She also said sometimes underwriters can be arranged by the Record Patriot.
Bridget Suchorski, of Honor, suggested holding an auction or raffle at the carnival. She said some business may donate prizes.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:25pm.
The next meeting of the Homestead Township Parks and Recreation Committee will be August 21, at 6:00pm.
